John 5:20-22 - The Believer's Hope.
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,
Jesus said the Father shows him all he does because the Father loves him in verse 20. He added there were even "greater works" that the Father will show him so the Jewish leaders who plotted to kill him will be amazed. What are these greater works Jesus was referring to?
If we look at the context which can be found in the next verse, Jesus was talking about resurrection. This is obviously regarding the "resurrection of the saints" that Apostle Paul pointed out to the Corinthian church.
I would like to talk more about resurrection because this is what Paul give an emphasized to the Corinthian church. He said in 1 Corinthians 15:12 "But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? Paul learned that some people in the Corinthian church said there was no resurrection of the dead.
Paul continued in the verse 13 " If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised." In other words, since Christ was resurrected those who believed and trusted Him as their Savior and Lord will be also resurrected.
In verse 14, it's more on like the effect or what's going to happen if there is no resurrection of the saints. He said "And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." He was telling them that the reason why they preached the gospel and have faith in Jesus because He was resurrected. And so those who trusted Him will be also resurrected.
And what they were preaching them were not true and themselves will be considered false witnesses. He said in verse 15-16 " More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. See, Paul's point was really the resurrection of the saints. He kept on repeating it for the Corinthian church to understand.
Paul was trying to give an emphasis of the resurrection of the saints because this our "Eternal Hope". That we will be resurrected and we will be Jesus as He promised He will go to the Father and prepare rooms for us. (John 14:1-4).
Now what's the other greater work that Jesus was referring to. See verse 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,. After the resurrection of the saints. There's gonna be judgment. We as Christ followers will be judge not as eternally condemned but with life as Jesus said He will give life to those He is pleased to give (vs21b). But those who rejects Him as Lord and Savior will be judged as eternally condemned. So have faith in Jesus and repent from your sins. For He will come and judge everyone.
