On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.
- We don't know who are the bride and the groom but they probably knew Jesus and his disciples because they were invited. Mary was there too. So we can tell, they knew each other. But we have to take note that the disciples here are not just twelve. It could probably more, so it was only Jesus who invited them.
3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine."
- This suggest that Mary has a special role in the wedding because she has to tell Jesus the they run out of wine.
4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
- In the greek it's not a disrespect to call woman to your mother. Like in the US, they will call their father or mother by first name often.
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
- Another hint that Mary has probably a role in the wedding because of what she was telling to the servants. To do what Jesus tells them. She was probably like an equivalent of a host or the supervisor.
6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
- The Jews have to always wash their hands before eating. It's their religious practice. The Pharisees, however, make it more strict that even questioned Jesus why He and his disciples does not washed their hands. See "But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. Luke 11:38 / "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!" Matthew 15:2.
- Nearby stood six stone water jars- this might suggests that they have show it publicly their religious practice. Boasting about their self righteousness by washing of their hands in public.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
- The jars were probably emptied already because the Jews used it when they washed their hands. So this would suggests that Jesus never break their ceremonial practices. However, when He asked the servants to fill them with water and made to wine, which means Jesus not only filled what's empty but He offered a new covenant.
- Why wine? Because it's what they needed. It's what was missing. Jesus would fill what's missing into our lives.
11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
- It's interesting it's the first miracle of Jesus was turned water into wine, not healing or others. As water used by Jews for outward cleanup; wine speaks of His new covenant. He was showing them that He had something better which is His works instead of ours.
12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
- Jesus had earthly brothers. Which means Mary was not a virgin after the birth of Jesus through the Holy Spirit.
Personal application:
- In our lives, we might not have done some ceremonial practices but we our have own decision that we failed to ask and seek God if it's His will. Whatever it is, let's humble before Him and let Him rule over us for He knew what's the best for us. Like Jesus turned the water into wine, which means He can do things that's beyond our control and understanding. Sometimes, we think we are knowledgeable enough to do in our own because we have the experience perhaps. But His ways are higher than our ways. His plans are higher than our plans.
